NEWPORT BEACH | AROUND NEWPORT | NOVEMBER 1, 2026

For Angels fans, Chuck Finley is remembered for the long left-handed delivery, the durability and the hitters who never seemed to get an easy at-bat. For Newport Beach, he is also a longtime local—someone whose life here extends well beyond the ballpark.

Finley spent most of his 17-year Major League career with the California Angels. He made his big-league debut in 1986 and pitched for the club through 1999 before finishing his career with Cleveland and St. Louis. He retired with 200 wins and 2,610 strikeouts. His 165 wins with the Angels remain a franchise record, and the team inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2009.

Those numbers tell the baseball story. The Newport story is more familiar and more local: Finley has been part of the community for years, and residents know him beyond the statistics and the Angels uniform.

He has also lent his time to community causes. Finley joined fellow Angels alumni for “Readers in the Outfield,” a literacy event that brought former players together with second-grade students. The program supported The Literacy Project, a Newport Beach-based nonprofit that helps children who are struggling with reading.

That combination—big-league history and a real connection to town—is what makes Finley stand out among Newport locals. He is part of Angels history, but he is also part of Newport’s own neighborhood stories.

His playing days are behind him. The local connection is not. For Angels fans and Newport neighbors alike, Chuck Finley remains a hometown favorite: an Angels legend who is still one of our own.

Help us out, Newport.
