NEWPORT BEACH | GO DO STUFF | OCTOBER 31, 2026
Halloween in Newport Beach has two very different scenes: family fun in the afternoon and a peninsula-wide costume party after dark.
The city’s ninth annual Halloween Spooktacular brought families to Mariners Park on Oct. 24 for trunk-or-treating, a haunted walkthrough, carnival games, bounce houses, pumpkin decorating and costume contests. The free event ran from 3 to 6 p.m., giving younger monsters a chance to collect candy before bedtime—and before the adults claimed the evening. (City event details.)
On Halloween night, the crowds shift toward the Balboa Peninsula. People come from across Orange County, including inland communities, to dress up, meet friends and make their way among the peninsula’s bars. The compact stretch of nightlife gives the evening its own rhythm: costumes moving down the sidewalks, groups comparing outfits and local bars filling up with people who may have spent the day nowhere near the coast.
A Halloween bar crawl is scheduled for Oct. 31, with check-in at Balboa Saloon and participating venues across Newport Beach. The event listing describes a multi-bar route on the peninsula, adding an organized option to the night’s usual rounds of bar-hopping. (Bar crawl listing.)
The costumes are part of the show. Some groups arrive with coordinated themes; others appear to have assembled their look moments before leaving the house, which is also a valid Newport tradition. Either way, Halloween gives the peninsula a rare chance to see pirates, movie characters and questionable decisions sharing the same sidewalk.
For residents, the annual influx means a lively night—and more people, traffic and parking pressure in a small area. Visitors should plan a ride, watch for pedestrians and be patient getting around. The peninsula can fit a lot of Halloween spirit, though it has never figured out how to add extra parking by costume contest.
From the daytime family events to the late-night bar scene, Halloween in Newport Beach is less one party than a full-day change of cast. The setting stays the same; the costumes get taller as the sun goes down.
