NEWPORT BEACH | AROUND NEWPORT | OCTOBER 19, 2026

Newport Beach keeps changing, but some places still feel like the neighborhood they came from. Fifteenth Street Surf Shop is one of them.

The original shop at 103 15th Street traces its roots to 1961, and the business now also operates a second Peninsula location at 3138 West Balboa Boulevard. Those decades cover different owners. Today, Dave and Cheryl Rosenberger are among the people carrying the tradition forward.

The shop is more than a place to grab wax and sunscreen. It sells surf and beach supplies, clothing and rentals, with details that reflect local taste. A 2023 American Surf Magazine profile described Cheryl’s careful eye for the shop and its collection of vintage posters, apparel and other pieces with a story behind them. Another Newport Beach community feature praised Dave and Cheryl for creating a shop that feels curated rather than simply stocked.

It’s a family affair, too. Hank Rosenberger, identified publicly as a shop manager, spoke to Spectrum News in March 2026 about how the business changes when spring break and summer bring crowds to the Peninsula. Tucker Rosenberger also lists a connection to 15th St Surf + Supply on a public professional profile. Other family members and their roles should be confirmed before naming them.

The little stops locals make before heading to the sand become part of a neighborhood’s memory. A quick conversation about the surf, a sweatshirt you wear for years, or the place your family picks up beach supplies can mean just as much as a famous landmark.

That’s why Dave, Cheryl and the 15th Street Surf Shop family belong in The Balboa Local’s Local Legends series. We’d love to hear their story in their own words, from the old Peninsula days to the next generation.
