NEWPORT BEACH | GO DO STUFF | OCTOBER 28, 2026
Newport Beach may be known for its beaches and harbor, but the city’s official off-leash dog-park list is short: there is one dedicated dog park, at Civic Center Park. The good news for local dog lovers is that this north-of-PCH spot pairs a proper fenced play area with room for a longer walk.
The dog park sits at the north end of the 14-acre Civic Center Park at 100 Civic Center Drive. It has separate play areas for large and small dogs, plus shade and water fountains for dogs and people. That makes it the best all-around choice in town for a dog who needs to run, meet other pups or burn off some energy without a leash. Check the posted park rules before heading in, and keep an eye on your dog around the gates and other animals.
Make it a bigger outing by walking the park’s 1.23-mile trail. The path crosses a wetlands area and passes public art, with views toward the bay and ocean. It’s a pleasant setting for people whose dogs are happier sniffing along beside them than mixing it up in a dog run. The park also has benches, picnic tables, restrooms and a parking lot, so it works for a quick stop or a longer family outing. Keep your dog leashed outside the designated fenced area; Newport Beach says off-leash dogs are not allowed in other public spaces.
For a classic Newport stroll, the city’s beaches are another option, but timing matters. Dogs on a leash no longer than six feet are allowed on the beach and beachfront sidewalks before 10 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m. They are prohibited there during the middle of the day, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bring a cleanup bag and use it.
One popular nature destination to cross off the dog-walk list is Buck Gully Reserve. The City prohibits dogs there to protect wildlife and reduce the risk of snake bites.
So, if you were expecting a long list of off-leash parks, Newport doesn’t have one. For fenced play, Civic Center is the pick. For a leashed walk with scenery, pair its trail with a legal-hour beach visit, and leave Buck Gully to the wildlife.
