NEWPORT BEACH | AROUND NEWPORT | NOVEMBER 1, 2026
Kobe Bryant’s name will always be tied to basketball: five NBA championships, an unforgettable work ethic and a generation of fans who grew up watching him play. But for nearly 20 years, Newport Coast was home. Bryant lived here with his family, and Newport became part of his story beyond the court.
His life ended in 2020, when he and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, died with seven others in a helicopter crash. The loss was felt around the world. In Newport, it was also felt close to home—in the community where the Bryant family had built a life.

Kobe’s legacy includes work he and Vanessa Bryant began together. In 2006, they launched the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation to support young people and families and encourage youth participation in sports. Its programs have included Mamba FC, an Orange County youth soccer club focused on fitness, teamwork and leadership.
The Bryant family’s connection to Newport also has a lasting place at Hoag Hospital. In 2026, Vanessa Bryant made a gift establishing the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Court at Hoag’s Newport Beach campus. The space helps patients, particularly families bringing home newborns, prepare to leave the hospital. Vanessa shared that Kobe had picked her and their daughters up there after their births.
The Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, created in memory of Kobe and Gianna, continues to support underserved athletes and young people in sports. Its work carries forward the family’s commitment to helping the next generation find opportunity through athletics.

A legacy is more than a highlight reel or a name on a building. It is what people continue to do because someone mattered to them. Kobe Bryant’s legacy lives in the game he changed, the young athletes he inspired and the charitable work his family continues. Newport remembers a global sports icon—and one of its own.
Help us out, Newport.
