NEWPORT BEACH | GO DO STUFF | OCTOBER 25, 2026

Newport Beach has plenty for a dog to sniff, inspect and—if the dog is honest—try to eat. From bay trails to restaurant patios, the town can make a pretty good day out for a person and their four-legged supervisor. The trick is knowing where dogs can run, where they need a leash, and which local businesses actually welcome them.

Groomers: good reviews, with the fine print

For a Peninsula salon, Newport Paws is kennel-free and says it gives dogs one-on-one attention near the Balboa Fun Zone. A recent roundup of Google ratings lists it at 5.0 stars from 14 reviews. For mobile grooming, Monsieur Groomer is listed at 4.9 from 91 reviews, while Kind To Canines is listed at 4.9 from 36. That makes Monsieur a strong mix of a high score and a larger review count among these options. Stars are helpful, though they cannot tell you whether a groomer understands your dog’s particular coat—or that your “just a trim” means just a trim. Check recent reviews and talk through the cut before booking; ratings and totals can change.

For the leash-off zoomies

Newport Beach Dog Park, near Avocado Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard by Fashion Island, has separate areas for large and small dogs, plus water and room to play. It opens at 7 a.m. and closes at dusk, except Wednesdays, when it opens at 9 a.m. That schedule gives everyone a chance to sleep in—especially the dog who considers 5:12 a.m. a perfectly reasonable breakfast hour.

For a calmer outing, Upper Newport Bay’s trails allow dogs on leashes no longer than six feet. Newport’s beaches also welcome leashed dogs before 10 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m.; during the middle of the day, the beach is for people, gulls and whatever that gull just stole. The city says dogs must stay leashed in public spaces except inside designated dog parks. Bring water and waste bags, and check posted signs before setting out.

Boarding: tour before the trip

Back Bay Day Care & Boarding on Birch Street offers boarding and daycare for dogs and cats, supervised play with compatible dogs, and veterinary care onsite. Doggie Daycare…And More on Placentia Avenue describes its facility as cage-free and staffed around the clock; it also offers webcam access and a gradual first visit. Both are worth a look, but the right fit depends on your dog. Ask about overnight supervision, vaccination rules, feeding and medication, emergency plans and how dogs are grouped. A quick tour can answer more than a dozen adorable Instagram photos.

Pup cups and patio meals

At Malibu Farm at Lido Marina Village, the online menu lists a pup cup—and also dog meals, in case your dog has moved beyond dessert. Bluewater Grill has a dog menu, water bowls and complimentary dog bones. Cappy’s Café welcomes dogs on its patio and under its outdoor canopy. Other Newport patio choices include Bear Flag Fish Co., Wilma’s Patio on Balboa Island, CUCINA enoteca at Fashion Island, and Zinc Café & Market, which provides water bowls.

Policies, menus and ratings can change, so call ahead—particularly if your dog has a reservation-level fan club. Keep the leash handy, give other diners a little room, and Newport can serve up a good day for both ends of the leash.

Help us out, Newport.
