NEWPORT BEACH | CITY HALL WATCH | OCTOBER 19, 2026

There’s an update in the city records involving the temporary outdoor patio at Five Crowns on East Coast Highway.

The Newport Beach Planning Commission revisited a limited-term permit and coastal development permit for the restaurant’s patio at its September 17 meeting. According to the staff summary, the City Council had approved the temporary patio and live-entertainment permits in April 2025 after denying an appeal.

The applicant later voluntarily surrendered the entitlement on December 2, 2025. The September 2026 item was meant to confirm that the earlier permission was no longer in effect and couldn’t be used for future approvals.

The recorded Planning Commission motion carried. The agenda does not establish what, if anything, the restaurant intends to propose next.

For Corona del Mar residents following outdoor dining changes along Coast Highway, the key distinction is that a previous temporary permit should not be mistaken for an active approval.
