NEWPORT BEACH | GO DO STUFF | OCTOBER 21, 2026
Newport’s legendary sunsets are easy to take for granted until the sky starts turning orange and everybody suddenly slows down to look. The best spot depends on what you want: toes in the sand, a blufftop breeze, or a wide view that takes in both the ocean and the harbor. Here are five local favorites to keep in your back pocket.
1. 32nd Street Beach
For the classic beach sunset, head toward the 32nd Street lifeguard tower. The tower, shoreline, and open Pacific make a simple, unmistakably Newport view. Bring a towel, settle into the sand, and stay a few minutes after the sun drops; the color often hangs around. It’s a beach, so check conditions and keep clear of lifeguard equipment and access paths.
2. Inspiration Point
Up in Corona del Mar, Inspiration Point gives you a front-row look at the coastline from above. It’s a good pick when you want an easy place to pause, watch the waves, and catch the last light without walking down onto the sand. The view faces the open ocean, so it feels especially big on a clear evening.
3. Lookout Point
A short way along the bluffs, Lookout Point offers another ocean-facing perch near Corona del Mar State Beach. It’s a relaxed stop for a quick sunset or part of an evening walk along Ocean Boulevard. If you have time, wander the nearby paths and take in the changing view as the sky dims.
4. John Wayne Park
The small park at 2501 Cliff Drive is likely the Cliff Drive spot you had in mind. It’s officially John Wayne Park, and its bluffside setting looks out over the harbor and ocean. Bring a camera and give yourself a moment to enjoy both views—the boats and channel on one side, the open coast on the other.
5. Sunset View Park
This is a different place from John Wayne Park: Sunset View Park sits along Superior Avenue, north of Coast Highway. A short blufftop trail gives you room to take in the ocean, with a quieter neighborhood feel than the beach. It’s a nice choice when you want a little space and a view that doesn’t require a big plan.
There isn’t one winner. Pick 32nd Street for the beach, Inspiration Point or Lookout Point for the bluffs, and John Wayne Park when you want that ocean-and-harbor combination. Check sunset time, arrive a little early, and bring a layer—the ocean breeze tends to show up right on cue.
