NEWPORT BEACH | GO DO STUFF | OCTOBER 25, 2026
If you’re looking at Newport Harbor and wondering where to start, the best spot depends on the kind of outing you want. The ocean piers are easy to find and lively; the harbor’s public fishing piers put you closer to the boats and protected water; and Upper Newport Bay offers a quieter, nature-focused shore trip. Here are five worthwhile places to try, with the local details that can help you plan.
1. Newport Pier
Start at McFadden Place for the classic pier experience: ocean air, beach activity and plenty to watch while you fish. Anglers often work the surf-facing water for perch and croaker. The Dory Fishing Fleet operates on the beach near the pier’s shore end, making this an easy stop to pair with breakfast or a walk along the sand.
2. Balboa Pier
Farther southeast on the Peninsula, Balboa Pier offers a long public walkway over the ocean and a different stretch of water to explore. It’s a good pick if you want room to settle in and wide coastal views. Bring tackle you can adjust to changing surf and conditions; the fish and bite can vary day to day.
3. Newport Harbor public fishing piers
For protected water and harbor scenery, choose one of the marked public fishing piers. The Balboa Island waterfront around Coral Avenue and South Bay Front is a useful starting area, with other public piers around Lido Isle, the Peninsula and Mariners’ Mile. These are short stops where you can watch boats move through the harbor while you fish. Use only clearly public access: many docks and seawalls are private.
4. Newport Harbor South Jetty
The south jetty near the harbor entrance puts anglers close to moving water, where the harbor meets the ocean. It can be an appealing change from a pier, but rocks, surf and footing require extra care. Follow posted access and closure signs. The City prohibits fishing at West Jetty View Park and along or on the adjoining west jetty, so don’t assume every jetty-side viewpoint is open to fishing.
5. North Star Beach in Upper Newport Bay
For a quieter outing, head north to Upper Newport Bay. North Star Beach is one of three shore-fishing areas identified by the Newport Bay Conservancy, along with the rocky outcrop between San Joaquin Hills Road and Big Canyon and the Jamboree Road bridge. Fishing here is from designated shore areas; fishing from vessels north of Pacific Coast Highway is not allowed. Stay on established access routes and give wildlife plenty of space.
Before heading out, check current California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations and local signs. License rules vary: qualifying public piers and listed jetties have exemptions, while nearby shoreline spots may require a license. Newport Beach also limits anglers to two lines and prohibits fishing from public wharves, docks, piers or seawalls within Newport Bay from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Pack out line and trash, respect other harbor users, and leave the shoreline cleaner than you found it.
Help us out, Newport.
